5. [Formal Complaint #ADB-25351998-L] Deceptive, Forced Installation of McAfee w/o User Consent & Unauthorized File Causing Machine to Crash

   I am a Creative Cloud All Apps annual plan subscriber since 2 years ago, here by writing to file my formal complaint regarding to Acrobat Reader DC installer (downloaded from here in the first result from Google: https://get.adobe.com/tw/reader/) forcefully installing McAfee to my machine with NO EXPLICIT TERMS TO NOTIFY USER before installation NOR ANY CLEAR OPTIONS TO LET USER UNCHECK MCAFEE installation, my installation of the Acrobat Reader was being abandoned due to having Acrobat Pro DC being installed whereas the INSTALLER STILL PROCEEDS TO INSTALL MCAFEE.
   Several attempts has been made to terminate the installation, however, every time after CLICKING YES IN CONFIRMATION SCREEN DOES NOT STOP INSTALLATION.

   After installation, McAfee PERFORMS AUTO SCAN AFTER INSTELLATION and crashed my machine as my machine has CPU VM mode turned on in BIOS setting, what’s more, THE INSTALLER WILL REGISTER MCAFEE IN MSCONFIG.EXE TO AUTORUN DURING STARTUP WITHOUT USER PERMISSION.

   The installation of McAfee is unauthorized, forceful without user consent, deceptive as there is no indication prior to installation as captured in image 1, 2 and 3. In summary, (1). Adobe’s website provides transportation to deceive user that the installer only provides the installation of Adobe Reader, whereas (2). Adobe’s installer provides method to allow installation of McAfee and allow (3). McAfee’s unauthorized access to ALL user’s machine files and (4). change operation system settings without ANY user permission (5). RIDING ON THE ADMINISTRATOR RIGHTS requested upon installer startup, given by the deceived, naïve user like me, in this case McAfee is considered as malware in this regard, no matter how effective it is to clear other malwares.

   This is a clear breach of trust, as a loyal customer of using your software for more than 10 years, this is very disappointing and discouraging to think after paying a fortune what user will gets is being infiltrated by trusting a loved brand and being a supporter for so long. It is found difficult to NOT feeling concern on Adobe’s integrity issue from now onwards when installing software updates or reinstallation on all my purchased products. This incident is making the public to concern your firm has very limited or no internal regulation to handle what to include in software installation packages, without proper explanation and promises to the public, users are at risk no matter they are paid customers or not.

   If customers’ honest feedback is not a concern as 4 feedbacks regarding to similar topic has been submitted since March 2021 with NO action from Adobe, this item clearly being tagged as low priority by the product team. To help with the justification for prioritizing this item as high risk, perhaps the compliance team may also be interested in looking at federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (“CFAA”), 18 U.S.C. § 1029 and 1030, which states (a). unauthorized access (or exceeding authorized access) to a computer that is used in interstate or foreign commerce and obtaining information, (b). infection (suitable to include unauthorized installation) of IT systems with malware and (c). any other activity that adversely affects or threatens the security, confidentiality, integrity or availability of any IT system, infrastructure, communications network, device or data, can be included in the criteria to law breach. For foreign users, the USA PATRIOT Act amended the CFAA and Access Device Fraud statute, 18 U.S.C. § 1029, to expressly apply them extraterritorially.

   I have reported this issue once in virtual chat service and explicitly stated to file this as a formal complaint. As instructed by the customer service representative, this is the only effective channel to file my formal complaint, this is the case reference number ADB-25351998-L4J4, my call handler promised his / her assistance to track the progress of this complaint closely.

   Active follow up in timely manner is kindly demanded and please provide further updates with solid action plans by 1st August 2022, otherwise further action will be taken to raise the concern and attention further for Adobe’s prioritization. For your kind note, I and my friends are considering unsubscribing with deep disappointment.

8. Reader should install without dependencies on 64bit acrobat

   When a CC license is on my machine, no one else can use reader. It cannot be downloaded, cannot be used, and has no functionality. My kids must use EDGE browser to read PDF files. works on 32bit versions just not new system. Fix this.

9. Allow Adobe Reader to stay installed after I sign in and out with an Adobe Acrobat account

   I share my computer with someone who does not have an Adobe Acrobat account. I would like to be able to sign out of my account but have them still use reader. As it stands now, if I sign out, they have to uninstall adobe acrobat and then reinstall the reader

11. Reader DC 2021.011.20039 uninstallation bug

    We are working with SCCM/packaging and we discovered a problem when trying to uninstall latest Reader DC 2021.011.20039 from computers by command line. Uninstallation seems to be finished successfully (Reader DC is removed from Programs and Features) but the process "hangs" and never ends, which will cause SCCM or other install system to report it as still running/in progress and not report as success. Attached is a log file from one instance of this issue. We were able to reproduce it on several VMs.

12. AcrobatInfo.exe

    In Windows, when Acrobat Reader is installed, AcrobatInfo.exe is registered as a COM server. It is registered with the wrong path : C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat DC\AcrobatInfo.exe. The correct path is C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat DC\Acrobat\AcrobatInfo.exe. This has been a longstanding issue that I have seen reported by CCleaner for years.

Yes, I know the icon can be added to the toolbar, but I and my staff have been using the right-click method for years and do not understand why we are now forced to change. Why can't we add it back to the right-click menu? It was working fine, why change it? Note this is a problem that generated identical complaints back in 2015.

16. PDF file type association broken after upgrading from Reader 2017 to Reader 2020

    In Windows 10, the file type association for .pdf stops working after upgrading from Adobe Reader 2017 (Classic Track) to Reader 2020 (Classic Track). Issue occurs if file association was originally configured by DISM or user for previous Adobe Reader version. The same .pdf file association is expected to work with new Adobe Reader versions.

    Double-clicking a PDF file displays Windows prompt "How do you want to open this file?". The HKCR registry key still contains an entry for the ProgID, AcroExch.Document.2017. Should the Reader 2020 installer remove the HKCR\AcroExch.Document.2017 registry key? Deleting the key appears to resolve the issue.

    Steps to reproduce the issue:
    1. Install Windows 10 Enterprise.
    2. Install Adobe Reader 2017 (Classic Track) using bootstrapper installation (setup.exe).
    3. Set default PDF program manually. This can also be applied using DISM during operating system deployment with XML containing the following entry; <Association Identifier=".pdf" ProgId="AcroExch.Document.2017" ApplicationName="Adobe Acrobat Reader 2017" />
    4. Install Adobe Reader 2020 (Classic Track) using bootstrapper installation (setup.exe).

17. Acrobat Reader 2017 start menu shortcut not removed after installing Reader 2020

    In Windows 10, after installing Acrobat Reader 2020 the start menu shortcut for the previous installation of Reader (2017) has not been removed. The Reader 2020 installer is expected to remove the Reader 2017 start menu shortcut. This does occur as expected if the base version of Reader 2017 (17.008.30051) is installed prior to installing Reader 2020.

    Steps to reproduce the issue:
    1. Install Windows 10 Enterprise.
    2. Install Adobe Reader 2017 (Classic Track) using bootstrapper installation (setup.exe). Setup.ini includes PATCH command under [Product] section; PATCH=AcroRdr2017Upd1701130196_MUI.msp.
    3. Install Adobe Reader 2020 (Classic Track) using bootstrapper installation (setup.exe).

    McAfee as a default is an absolute disgrace. I wish there was some simple PDF software provided by a company less willing to bend over for a dollar.

    Don't provide McAfee to finally appear as a legitimate, customer-first company. Embarrassing.

19. IE Addon AcroPDF64.dll is missing with Adobe Acrobat Reader 2020 Classic

    There is no 64-Bit IE Addon available with 2020 Classic Reader. Could you help with updating the package with the 64-Bit IE Addon to have seamless access when accessing IE with Reader 2020 Classic ?

20. Give Federated ID users the ability to login to Adobe Reader

    Our company has an active Enterprise license agreement for Acrobat and other products. One of the key reasons we did this was to enable Federated IDs for access to the applications so that the ID would be integrated to Azure AD. Users that only need Reader and do not require a full-blown licensed copy of Acrobat are not able to login to Reader. The only way to login to Reader is to create a personal, ‘Adobe ID’ which is then outside of corporate control or management. Since Reader is ‘free’ software, there should be no reason that it can’t be added to the list of applications that a Federated ID has the ability to login to.
