Adobe, this is a bug. Read Mode is not working the way the current documentation describes: https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/viewing-pdfs-viewing-preferences.html
I made my account because I was frustrated that Read Mode no longer just hides all the window clutter! Even F8 & F9 don't hide as much as Read Mode used to!
