You're likely experiencing this issue because Adobe Reader (or Acrobat Reader) is set to open PDFs in the same window instead of in multiple tabs or windows.

Here’s how to fix it so you can refer to multiple PDFs at the same time:

✅ Option 1: Open PDFs in Separate Windows
You can manually open multiple windows of Adobe Reader:

Right-click on the Adobe Reader icon on your desktop or Start menu.

Select "Open" again (do this multiple times if needed).

Use File > Open in each window to load different PDFs.

✅ Option 2: Enable Tabbed View in One Window (If Using Adobe Acrobat DC)
If you're using Adobe Acrobat DC (not just the free Reader), you can enable tabs:

    Open Adobe Acrobat.

Go to Edit > Preferences > General.

Check the box: “Open documents as new tabs in the same window (requires restart)”.

    Click OK, then restart Acrobat.

Now you can open multiple PDFs in tabs.
