    With this I'd also like the ability to add a custom message to the closing so that users would see a message explaining why it was closed and what action they should take.

    To view when clients have viewed the document, open the Activity Panel. Check the checkbox next to your file name and the on the right you'll see something labeled "Activity". You can expand that to see that activity. So no, you don't need to open each one to see the activity, just check on the box to reveal the info on the right. This information is also available from the viewer if you open each one.
