I want to add that this only occurs on macOS. The Preferences / JavaScript / "Use external JavaScript editor" feature has been completely broken on macOS since at least 2019 — per Shawn's bug report, the external editor launches OK but then Acrobat hangs indefinitely even if you kill the process of the external editor.
For anyone who is doing complex JavaScript development in Acrobat, an external editor is essentially a requirement. The only workaround available is to run Acrobat in a Windows VM, which is a continual source of frustration at our company.
