    The same PDF with bookmarks and a clickable table of contents worked on my phone during a long trip, even with the images exported at 150 dpi.

    Bookmarks plus a clickable table of contents on page two worked best for me. Exporting the images at around 150 dpi before building the PDF kept the file small enough for phones, and I only used internal links for the jump back to the contents.

    Pressing F4 right after opening a file hides the pane for that window, which saves the daily click. It still comes back on the next launch, so a setting that remembers it closed would be the real fix.
