   Agreed, I also have this issue and it's making me jump through some ridiculous hoops (as of yet, I still don't have a solution).

   EDIT: I just found out that I can mostly use macOS Pages to open the Word document, and then export from there. Won't work for everyone though as it has issues with some fonts, but it at least got me past my current stopping block.
