I had been having the same problem on my iMac. After about 2 months of quitting and restarting Acrobat I took drastic measures. I finally fixed the issue by uninstalling acrobat and removing all files associated with acrobat or pdfs from the application and library folders. The only thing I could think of that caused the problem is left over files from previous versions.
