This happens for us as well. We agree, it would be useful to have the ability to save the "Split Vertical" view as the default setting, either per-document or per-computer (through GPO).
We are using the setting under Perferences > Accessibility > Show Portfolios in Files mode. We would also like to have a way to keep the view split vertically, as this is more conducive to our business process.
I have submitted a sample PDF Portfolio to the email address below, as well as screenshots displaying each scenario.
