1. Re-enable keyboard functionality in the new Acrobat interface

   I am a professional proofreader. My clients expect me to use the built-in annotation and commenting tools, and in the 2023 Acrobat interface I’ve come across several points of friction that literally double the amount of time it takes me to implement my markup.

   1. I can no longer apply a tool after selecting text

   In the old Acrobat, I could select text first and then look for the tool I wanted to apply to the selection. In the 2023 Acrobat, many tools are unavailable to me after I’ve already selected text. For example, if I haven’t activated the replace selected text tool before selecting text, navigating to that tool deselects my text.

   After I’ve identified a proofing issue in the text I’m reading, I have to decide what I want to do with the text, select the correct tool to perform that action, and then go back to select the text that requires that action—a sequence that takes my attention away from the text that needs fixing and forces me to hold that information in my working memory while searching for the right tool. It is four mental steps instead of two, which means it takes me twice as long.

   1. The new Acrobat forces me to use my mouse where I previously used my keyboard

   With Comments open in the old Acrobat, if I started typing, the program would insert the text I typed. If I selected text and started typing, the program would replace the selection with what I typed. Intuitive, right?—functioning just like a word processor. Unless there’s a setting I can change to enable this feature, it seems I can no longer do this in the new Acrobat. I can still select text and delete it with my keyboard, but the program no longer recognizes any text I try to input.

   It seems also from Adobe’s guide to keyboard shortcuts in Acrobat that there’s no keyboard-only way to select some of the more commonly used proofreading markup tools, including insert text and replace selected text. For proofreaders with print disabilities, who rely on the keyboard rather than the mouse to navigate a document, this change must be an accessibility nightmare.

   The decreased keyboard functionality also means that when I’m trying to mark up text in a link, I can’t use my keyboard to navigate and select the text. Using the mouse activates the link, so in the past, I’ve clicked near a link, keyed over to the text I want to select and used the shift key to select the text. Now, instead of being able to directly mark up the change with keystrokes, I’m having to highlight the linked text and use a comment to explain the change, which is both more cumbersome for me and possibly less precise and clear to the designer inputting the changes.

   1. The categorization of commenting and annotation tools is unintuitive

   The annotation tools have now been subcategorized:

   To access the delete text (strikethrough) tool, you first have to click on the highlight tool (though, as I discussed above, this is less of an issue because strikethrough is also accessible through the pop-up and the delete key).
   Not only does this categorization force the user to click twice to access a tool, but it also imposes an unnecessarily mental burden on the user to remember how these tools have been classified. To me, this classification is completely unintuitive: thematically, insert, replace, and delete text are related, and comment and highlight are related, but in the new interface they are not organized in that way.

2. Go back to the previous version and layout of Reader!

   Go back to the previous layout/version of Reader, this new version is terrible! Just making something new/different doesn't make it better and most software companies seem to be struggling to actually improve their product, so they slap some new stickers on it, move things around and try to convince us that we now have a better product to use - yeah right!

3. Layout Changes

   I have been disappointed with the update to the layout. The pages are the right hand side. As a left handed person, I often use a touch screen or key strokes for many things. It wasn't great at the top, but I'm left handed, I'm used to adapting. The right hand navigation is disappointing. :( Please test more with lefties before you change things! Thank you!

8. Internal link preview

   Many PDF documents contain internal links. When clicking on these, the user is taken to another part of the document. It would be incredibly useful to me and my colleagues if there was a 'preview link' option. Perhaps this could work by hovering the mouse over the link, and the preview to the link pops up in a small temporary window, allowing you to quickly view the link, without redirecting to a different page.

   The motivation for this is as follows: In mathematical sciences, these internal links often refer to equations earlier in the document, which are being combined to create new results. It can be difficult and frustrating to constantly scroll up and down, to check a calculation, and I often lose my place. This would be the digital equivalent of having two book pages open at the same time, and would make checking calculations so much easier!

10. Acrobat Reader 2017 start menu shortcut not removed after installing Reader 2020

    In Windows 10, after installing Acrobat Reader 2020 the start menu shortcut for the previous installation of Reader (2017) has not been removed. The Reader 2020 installer is expected to remove the Reader 2017 start menu shortcut. This does occur as expected if the base version of Reader 2017 (17.008.30051) is installed prior to installing Reader 2020.

    Steps to reproduce the issue:
    1. Install Windows 10 Enterprise.
    2. Install Adobe Reader 2017 (Classic Track) using bootstrapper installation (setup.exe). Setup.ini includes PATCH command under [Product] section; PATCH=AcroRdr2017Upd1701130196_MUI.msp.
    3. Install Adobe Reader 2020 (Classic Track) using bootstrapper installation (setup.exe).

11. Opening a PDF in a Windows virtual desktop should open an instance of Acrobat in the current virtual desktop

    With the introduction of virtual desktops in Windows 10, some users such as myself have multiple projects going on simultaneously. The virtual desktop feature greatly aids compartmentalization in this aspect.

    Let us say I am working in a virtual desktop called vd3 for instance, and I do not currently have an instance of Acrobat running on vd3. Now I open a PDF file and there is already an instance of Acrobat running on a different virtual desktop, say vd1. Now, instead of opening a new instance of Acrobat in vd3, Windows forces a switch to vd1 and opens my PDF in a new tab in the instance of Acrobat on vd1 instead of in a new instance on vd3. This impacts productivity.

    If there is already an instance of Acrobat open in the current virtual desktop, then this works as expected: a new tab is opened in the instance of Acrobat in the current virtual desktop. However, one must first manually remove a tab from an existing instance and then move that new instance to a new virtual desktop and this can become a nuisance.

    It would be a good quality of life upgrade if a new instance of Acrobat was automatically started in the current virtual desktop if there is not an instance of Acrobat already running.

12. Prevent Adobe Reader DC window from move/resize/zoom from pdf file InitialView definition

    I have usually opened few pdf files on my 3rd monitor (datasheets, manuals,etc - documentation for somethig that I work on right now), I also send inquires and initialize orders for things I need to... When I open pdf with invoices/inquires those files tends to move the Adobe Reader window to my center (primary) monitor and resize it (and change zoom) - it drives me mad.
    I did a bit research and this must happens because those files have defined so called "InitialView", so here is my petition:

    Add option that prevent window Adobe Reader DC from moving and resizing when opening pdf file that have this "annoying InitalView" set up (e.g. checkbox with name: "Ignore InitialView of pdf document")

13. Mouse cursor keep windows settings

    I have accessibility settings for mouse cursor in windows, big red cursor because I don't see little white/black cursor. In adobe reader it disappear hovering to document, it turn into tiny black cross-hair. Please keep it as i set it in windows.

14. Blur tool in Photoshop for iPad

    Photoshop for iPad is of great importance especially for natural work with a pencil. Especially with tools like brush, eraser ... But why isn't the "blur" tool available in Photoshop for iPad? This tool is directly designed for the pencil, according to my experience. Would it be possible to supplement it?

15. Fix missing Edit Quick Tools option

    Edit Quick Tools bar use to be available in Acrobat Reader (Windows 10) but not any more.

    We can provident a voice search in pdf file, we can load any pdf file & we can search on voice in that file, it will be one of the most useful function.

    Option to disable "Share" and "Sign in" buttons.

    "Share" is an obvious distraction when trying to read PDFs, since it's a bright blue call-to-action.

20. Linux support via wine

    I like all adobe products but I don't like the fact that to use them I should use Windows or Mac. I understand supporting Linux is a huge work but for something as small as acrobat reader it is possible with little effort.

    It is possible to install acrobat reader on Linux via wine. I suggest packaging acrobat reader with wine and distributing it to Linux.
