California Court Ruling for Bates Numbering Has Changed
The California ruling for filing court documents as of January 2019 requires the exhibit number of a PDF to be included with the Bates stamp. This means that the exhibit number needs to be able to change for each PDF file that you are batch stamping while the bates stamp changes for each page in each sequential Exhibit file. In short, an "Exhibit X of X" or "File Name" needs to be added to the header/footer options so legal professionals can continue to bates stamp their court files in batches. Adding the Exhibit number to each PDF file separately defeats the purpose of using Acrobat for it's ability to bates number in batches. Does Adobe has plans to add this? We have a multitude of clients asking what they can do in Acrobat to accommodate this new rule. Can you please advise ASAP? Thank you in advance.

This is a requirement in Nevada now, too. When we submit trial exhibits to the court, the PDF file name is the exhibit number (e.g., 1.pdf, 2.pdf, 3.pdf) and the Bates number on the document is the File Name plus the page number (e.g., 1-001, 1-002, 1-003; 2-001, 2-002; 3-001, etc.). We need to do the following via the Bates stamping tool: (1) add the file name as the Prefix; (2) format the page number with leading zeros; and (3) have access to the existing Bates stamping options like shrinking the page, and setting appropriate margins, font size and font color.
