Acrobat Pro crashes on macOS when opening PDFs whose file name or file path contains emoji characters.
- Brief Title
Acrobat Pro crashes on macOS when opening PDFs whose file name or file path contains emoji characters.
- Steps to Reproduce the Issue
On macOS, create a folder and/or a PDF file whose name contains emoji characters
Example folder names: 📁Documents, Work📘
Example file names: Report📄.pdf, Invoice🔥.pdf
Place the emoji-named PDF inside any folder (emoji or non-emoji folder).
Open the PDF using Adobe Acrobat Pro.
Wait a few seconds after the file opens.
- Environment
OS: macOS (Sequoia 15.6.1)
Application: Adobe Acrobat Pro (25.001.20997)
No plug-ins installed
Issue reproduces with any PDF file, regardless of content
- Expected Result
Acrobat Pro should open the PDF normally and remain stable, even if the file name or any part of the file path contains emoji characters.
- Observed Result
Acrobat Pro consistently crashes within a few seconds when opening a PDF whose file name or folder path includes emoji characters.
Removing emojis from either
the file name, or
any folder in the file path
immediately prevents the crash.
- Additional Notes (User Experience)
I originally could not understand why Acrobat kept crashing every time I opened certain PDFs.
It turned into a very frustrating experience — the application kept crashing repeatedly, and I was completely confused for quite some time.
Eventually, I discovered that the cause was simply that one of my folder names contained an emoji. Removing the emoji instantly fixed the issue.
This makes the problem very easy to reproduce, but also very confusing for users who don’t realize emojis can cause Acrobat to crash.
