Fix the FIX tool for Artifacting
When you have elements with no alt-text you get accessibility errors when running the checker. However, if you right click on the error and choose "fix" and walk through the items and mark them as decorative, instead of actually making them an artifact it simply changes the tag to "Artifact" which is not a valid tag and creates other errors. You then have to go in and properly designate the objects as Artifacts properly for the other errors to go away. VERY Frustrating. Come on Adobe Acrobat!
This is a repeatable condition and needs to be fixed immediately please!
Setting something as an artifact is a state and not a valid tag in the tags tree. Very frustrating that one tool designed to fix an issue actually creates other issues.
Thank you for contacting us. I have raised the issue with the engineering team. We have kept it our radar and will be fixing it in the near future.
Meanwhile I would suggest you to use Reading Order tool to mark the Figure as Artifact for fixing the issue.
Please update to the latest version of Acrobat Pro DC to experience new features.

@LRS The Read Order is dictated by the tags tree. When you look at the Order panel and see the items are out of order this is only read by a few outdated screen readers. PDF/UA mandates tag order not "Order" panel. But if you are going to set that, you should set it first before adjusting the Tags tree because it will move your tags around. Super Frustrating. Wish there was a "Match Tags Tree" button. Would make life SO MUCH easier!
The reading order panel doesn't work. It looks right but it's not when you "read" through it. I found from page 10 of this document https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/pdf-tagging.pdf
after searching online and finding this in Adobe's forum:
You have to go into the tags tree to find and see the item is out of order then move it with in there. I spent days trying to figure out why my images , , were being read in between my box of text.
Using a Mac, the Fix and other dialog boxes don't even open to make changes. I didn't even know they existed until I found a video. The reader is reading my map artwork, overriding my alt text and object custom text.
Accessibility tools remain a nightmare
