Creating table summary removes accessible table tags
Using the latest Acrobat DC on MacOS Sierra, the only way to add a summary to a table also removes correct, accessible tags.
The only way to access the table summary is to open the Touch Up Reading Order panel, highlight the table in question, and mark it as a table in the TURO panel--even though the table was already correctly tagged and in the correct reading order. After this is done, the user can right click on the table and add a table summary.
However, doing this changes the <table> tag to two nested <sect> tags and removes any <TH> header cells, which are necessary for accessibility. If a document is already accessible except for a table summary, the person remediating the document has to completely retag the table to get the summary, instead of being able to just add a summary to an already-correct table.
Some accessibility tutorials account for this and include instructions to re-designate the table with the TURO panel, and some just open the TURO panel and right click without having to update the tags (which does not work), so I am hoping this is a bug that can be fixed. Older versions of Acrobat force the user to remove existing tag structure before being able to add a table summary.
This makes a table summary not worth it when you're working with documents at scale, as our company is. It would be really nice to have this feature available to us without all the extra steps redoing what was already done correctly.

Can the final resolution to the poster's (Elizabeth's?) issue be included here? I have the same issue and don't see anything after Elizabeth's post asking if there's "something wrong with the existing tagging?" except for the comment that she was sent an email regarding her issue. How does one get to the table summary option? I want to add one but cannot pull it up from anywhere obvious. I also have had problems retagging things and suddenly tags have changed into <sect> or <p> tags removing proper TDs and THs and shuttling content into oddly nested orders different from what was set up properly. Thank you, Adobe experts.

Hi Vivek,
Thanks for replying. I was retagging the table, because I could not find the table summary menu option unless I retagged it.
I just tried it again, as you instructed, and it works for some tables/some documents, but not all. The document that doesn't work appears to have correct tags — <Table> <THead> <TBody> <TR> and so on — but when I open the TORU panel, selecting the table and right-clicking reveals a menu that doesn't have a table summary option. The problem here is that if I retag this table, the new tags are definitely wrong, lacking headers. Is there something wrong with the existing tagging?
I have a screenshot but am not sure how to attach it.
Thanks,
Elizabeth
