Adding Bates Numbering Range to Existing File Names
As Bates Numbering/Stamping is commonly used in the legal profession and because we typically handle a large number of documents it would be nice if Adobe had the capability to allow you to Add Bates Numbering Ranges to the EXISTING File Names.
For example, after you click on Add Bates Numbers, you can click on Output Options, and the window pops-up where you can have the option to either keep the original file names OR replace the file names with the starting and ending Bates Number (e.g. 000100-000115.pdf). I want to do both and keep the original file name with the Bates Range in front of it. I don't want to have to manually add in the file name for every file after bates stamping, which if I have a thousand files can be very time consuming.
For example, if I have the following File names:
"Emails to Jane Doe (01-13-18)"
“Medical Reports from John Doe (02-02-18)”
"Bank Statements from XYZ (02-27-18)"
I want Adobe to be able to output the following:
"00001-00115 Emails to Jane Doe"
"00116-00210 Medical Reports from John Doe (02-02-18)"
“00211-00236 Bank Statements from XYZ (02-27-18)"
This would prevent me from having to manually input the file names after selecting replace with Bates Number or vice versa (having to manually input the bates range in front of the file name, if I chose the option to keep original file names). I am surprised Adobe has yet to add this feature as it is widely used in the legal profession and I see that many people in the community forums have asked how to accomplish this, but have not received an answer. This would save us a lot of time and the legal community would rejoice. Thank you.

It's awesome that this feature now exists, but it's very clunky and not intuitive. I have 3 requests to make this better. (1) Please build it into the menu option so users don't have to remember to add %BATES_NUMBER_KEY% each time; (2) Please, please, please give us the ability to save it as a default so we don't have to set it every time (kinda how we can save bates numbering profiles); (3) It would also be nice if the prefix was shown only once followed by the Bates number range instead of how you include the prefix twice (this is preferred: PREFIX 0001-0004, instead of this: PREFIX 0001-PREFIX 0004). Thank you!!

The %BATES_NUMBER_KEY%" results in "NAME 0001-NAME 0005". Is there a way to have it so that it looks like this "NAME 0001-5" ? So that the NAME part only appears once and the leading zeros only appear once?

That is awesome! Is this feature only viable with Acrobat DC? Or will this work with Acrobat 2017 after updating? Please advise.

Hi,
We are delighted to share with you that Acrobat and Reader Desktop release for DC Continuous (20.012.20041) is Live now and this takes care of the Feature Request "Adding Bates number to existing file names"
For more Info refer here : https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/whats-new.html
As per this new feature, for adding the Bates number to a filename, enter string "%BATES_NUMBER_KEY%" in the Insert Before or Insert After fields(as desired) in the Output Options dialog of Bates Numbering.
Please update your Acrobat (It should Auto update or you should do Help -> Check for updates) and let us know your Feedback.
Thanks

It's ridiculous that this isn't a feature.

When is the next Acrobat release that would have this as mentioned below?

Any update on this Adobe?; our team was just discussing this today in a meeting. It is a very needed feature!

Yes, we definitely need this option in Adobe! Right now I've been using Bulk Utility Rename and excel to name the files the way I want... such a hassle.

I am glad to find this thread. I have been wishing for years Acrobat Pro had the capability to not only replace file names with bates numbers, but to append bates number ranges to existing file names. It makes so much more sense and I agrees with other commenters on how useful and time-saving this is.

I came across this after searching for the same thing, as adding a Bates number to the end of the file name would save me hours and hours of time manually changing file names and manually typing privilege log entries. How can it be 2020 and this can't be an option?

It’s a must have!!

Thanks for raising this feature request.
We have forwarded this to our engineering team to look into it.

It would be life-changing. I currently keep two versions of my documents so I can compare side-by-side in two windows - one version is original file name, one version is Bates-stamped version. Such a pain. AND the only reason I have to pay for the "Pro" version is because it is the only program that allows Bates-stamping. You'd think since they are basically charging a higher fee to the legal community they would at least make it completely useful. It seems like it would be a very simple tweak for them, and yet years of asking has resulted in no change. How hard could this be??

I've been asking for months; even had call with Adobe team to explain and illustrate the importance along with showing them the various new court rules... maybe if more people commented, Adobe might realize that this feature needs updating?

This is an absolutely critical feature for bates labeling, and i hate doing it by hand. I will purchase the product that has this feature and abandon those that do not.
