Solved this. I use Preview on Mac. Works fine. Adobe seem determined to make what was a good program unusable, and charge an annual fee for the privilege.

This is really messed up. For the second time in two years I had to hunt down the + and - buttons by looking through various threads like this one until I figured out how to fix it (see answer below). Just wasted a good 30 minutes of my work day, again. Why in the world, Adobe, do you keep moving those buttons and keep messing around with them? It should not be this hard. Please, PLEASE make them easy to find and then leave them alone.
I shouldn't have to waste so much time hunting down a function that is essential to reading thousands of PDF documents a month. I don't want to click 30 different buttons to zoom in on the page I'm currently reading. Sheesh.

As someone pointed out many months ago in this thread, the zoom buttons and the zoom magnification indicator (percentage) will show up in the main toolbar <b>IF</b> you are in "Tab Mode". If you are in "Window Mode", the only way to make these items appear is in the floating page control toolbar.

Although it is frustrating to have a new document open as a tab inside an already open document, it only takes a moment to drag that tab out into its own window. And then both documents still have the zoom buttons in their 'main' toolbars.

Toolbars are different in tab mode v. window, What moron thought this was a good idea. Is adobe trying to be idiots or does in come naturally.

Yeah, what happened here?! What stupid ___fmonkey engineer or manager made this decision? Seriously, do you people have nothing better to do that simply change things willy nilly to frustrate your users. For the amount of money you charge us to use your software, you should have a robust and rigorous user test community and not take away functionality that has been there for a long time. Get the ___k with it Adobe. Though, sadly, I doubt you will. Make Zoom the way it was before or — gasp! — allow your users to customize it to their working preferences. That would be good customer experience and UX design.

There must be a simple alternative to Acrobat Reader that isn't full of bloat?
So, OK I am not paying for it now but then I wouldn't pay for something in the future that just gets up my nose; I would look hard for something that I actually wanted.
Adobe seem to be going down the route of having to add stuff to justify their existence and the cost but they get further and further away from what 99% of users actually want.
I ditched Photoshop some time ago for the same reason.

How has this been under review for over a year? It's a simple adjustment. Change it back to show both or at least give us the option to show both w/o having to have them in the floating toolbar that gets in the way. This is ridiculous. Accountants use this on a daily basis. Are you trying to lose sales? This is how you lose sales.

Meanwhile a fully bloated software which has being developed not to meet the demands of users. Essential functions are missing in DC.

I see where they went, I see where lot's of people complained about them before. But I spent way too much time figuring out where they went. Should have left the UI locations available or given us a way to design what elements are on the tool bar. Just moving **** without any warning is beyond annoying.

View > Show/Hide > Page Controls > Show Page Controls.

If this adds it as a pop out, click the button on the far right of the pop out tool bar and add it to your controls at the top.

WTF would you remove something as basic as + and - zoom tools?

Use this: hold down your CTRL button, then press either the + or the - button to zoom in/out.
NOTE: You do NOT have to hold the Shift button.
Just like zooming a web page.

Please, Adobe, give me more reasons to hate you. You charge me over $600 a year, and the only help I can get is through your community, so a lot of people who DO NOT work for Adobe can TRY to help me. Well, it's not like your employees were super helpful anyway, so there's that. I used this tool all the time because I'm a designer, and different PDFs have different zoom needs at different times. Please take it from my toolbar so I have to drill to change things. That doesn't affect my productivity at all. It's not like I'm in a production environment or anything, trying to get work done. This kind of thing makes people keep an eagle eye out for Adobe replacements as soon as humanly possible. What if you created software that met people's needs?

OMG this was driving me crazy. Couldn't find a solution online so I decided to move on. Until I noticed that my hand tool was also missing. So I went looking for it and viola. I found the zoom -/+ option.

Here is how you get it. Go to View<Show/Hide<Page Control<Show Page Controls. And there it is. You can also "dock" the page controls by selecting the image that looks like a keyboard with an arrow pointing upward at the farthest right on the page control to move the control to the toolbar.

I've discovered that there is a +/- zoom tool... however it only shows up when my Acrobat is set up as in tabs (not individual windows).

(Preferences > General (left side) > Check box: Open Documents as new tabs in the same window (requires relaunch)

Personally I don't like the tabs if I need two window side by side.. although separating them is another nuisance.

But the +/-/% is possible to be shown. I just don't know what causes this.
