Acrobat Pro DC (AcroCEF) eating up 21GB of memory and CPU time on Mac
When macs left unattended and Acrobat pro running the application increasing consumes CPU time and memory. Coming in the next morning my machine is extremely slow to respond. This is happening on two mac machines I use.. one Sierra 10.12.6 and one High sierra. Both machine regularly use MS office applications and Saffari and Chrome browsers. Both utilize Mcafee. Acrobat will not close unless being forced to do so.

I have had non-stop issues with adobe acrobat pro since I installed it. I am using this for studying and it is just constantly crashing on random occasions. Editing a PDF is painfully slow. I am running programming IDE's such as visual studio and R studio absolutely fine, watching videos and have multiple browser tabs open simultaneously with no issues what so ever.
As soon as I open acrobat, the fan on my Mac goes crazy. I had an error report pop up saying I need to force quit apps due to system memory running out (never occurred until I installed this). It's taking up about 70% of my CPU.I wanted to use my pro account for work as well. As soon as I logged into my professional account on my work laptop, the same happened.
It seems to be for the files that are saved to adobe cloud. When I have them saved locally only, there isn't as much of an issue.
for some reason, files seem to be automatically saving to the cloud. I'm going to attempt to remove them from adobe cloud (when it stops crashing and actually allows me to), and see if that solves the problem.
I have lost hours worth of work editing pdfs because of this. -

I have similar issues with AcroCEF on a PC. I have three PDFs open and am using comment functions. Eventually the fans get noisy and Acrobat (DC) will freeze. At that point, in Task Manager, I can see multiple instances of AcroCEF where I would normally see the names of PDFs that are open. Have to force quit, restore, and then check that none of my comments have been lost. Repeatedly.

AcroCEF and related looking executables hogging memory and also hanging on to files all day every day. Have to use an "unlocker" program to move/rename/delete anything I open in Adobe programs because, even after I close the programs, Adobe is still using those files and I get "file still in use" errors.
I'm currently not running ANY Adobe programs (not even the CC app) and there are 14 different Adobe processes running and actively using up memory right now. What is even going on???

For a PDF reader this is nuts. I have 3 PDF open and not using the reader much at all:
501 28119 1 0 3:55pm ?? 101:40.19 /Applications/Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.app/Contents/MacOS/AdobeReader
That is over 1.5hrs of CPU use in the last 2hrs. What are Adobe doing mining bitcoin?

Hello Everyone,
We have had few similar reports but couldn’t get hold of anyone for further investigation.
AcroCEF is responsible for some infrastructure activities and many other user centric workflows and different workflows can have different issues. You observe multiple AcroCEF processes but for different purposes and we are not sure who is using which process(workflow). As user, you might think it’s same issue that AcroCEF is consuming high memory/CPU but at the end everyone might have different issue based on their application usage.
We could reproduce some related issues in-house and fixed them in couple of our last releases. Please write back to susoni@adobe.com for quick discussion to help us understand/resolve your issue.
Thanks

I am able to Force Quit the AcroCEF using Activity Monitor, but it comes back after I put the mac to sleep and wake it again. The CPU usage is outrageous, and the fan goes full blast. Very annoying.

My solution to this problem was to go right ahead and just delete the AcroCEF.app. You can find it by going to the install location of AcrbatDC --> right click on the AcrobatDC.app and hit show package contents. From there you will need to open the "Helpers" folder. You will see the AcroCEF folder in which the AcorCEF.app is placed. I advise you to just duplicate the AcroCEF.app beforehand so that you have a copy in case anything goes wrong.
Please enjoy.

Same problem here. Acrobat is displaying a simple 190 pages document and appears to be using 50% of the CPU ressources. After a while the Macbook temperature rises and the fans start. As a solution, instead of using Acrobat as a PDF reader, I use the Preview app from MacOS that consumes almost no CPU. Please have a look at the screen captures attached. All last versions installed (Mojave and Acrobat).

Hi everybody!
This problem lasted more than a year on my iMac system. I did several attempts to ask help from Adobe, but they couldn't help me to solve this problem. ;-(
I've search the internet for possible solutions.
At the website https://www.b4print.com/index.php?topic=9297.135 someone suggested to create a new user account. So I did. It's quite a job to set up another account, but I was fed up the freezing system every single day.
Guess what: the problem is gone! I work 4 months now with a normal functioning Acrobat Pro. -

I just started having the same issue a week or so ago. I've been using Acrobat DC for a long time and never encountered it before. I started hearing my fans going strong, and checked Activity Monitor and found its usually Acrobat Pro DC and AcroCEF or AcroCEF Helper that are at the top of the list of CPU hogs. When I quit the app the problem stops. I'm running

I manually checked for updates; none available. AcroCEF starts using resources and my laptop's fans go nuts within 30 second to 1 minute after launching Acrobat Pro DC. Help would be appreciated, as I'm paying monthly for Creative Cloud, and I use Acrobat every day.

Uninstall and reinstall through Creative Cloud helped me. (I didn't clean any other setting files or history files.) Give it a try.
