Acrobat Pro DC's AcroRd32.exe may not close when loaded through the ActiveX PDF Reader object
One of our clients is experiencing issues with Adobe Acrobat Pro DC. We have an Internet Explorer/ActiveX application in which a user can view PDF files through Internet Explorer's 'Adobe PDF Reader' ActiveX control.
When the user closes the control, Acrobat DC's AcroRd32.exe will close a moment later. If the user opens another PDF document too quickly after closing the first one, this new instance of AcroRd32.exe will not shut down properly even after closing the control.
Adobe Reader DC does not have this issue, but there it appears related to the 'Enable Protected Mode at startup' checkbox under 'Security (Enhanced)' in the preferences. When this checkbox is disabled, Adobe Reader DC will display the same issue. However, this checkbox doesn't exist in Acrobat Pro DC.
What can we do to prevent this from happening for our customers that use Acrobat Pro DC?

Hi kay van Hout,
Can you please confirm if on opening the PDF in IE using Acrobat Pro, do you observe a yellow bar.
Basically is protected view enabled for you?If yes,
1) Can you please provide a sample application to us to debug the issue better.
2) Provide a process monitor logs for the failure scenario. -

I will get this checked and revert back

Could we perhaps get an update on this issue? We're still experiencing a lot of issues and are wondering how we could fix it. Its been a while since the last update.

We use an application which runs inside IE which uses ActiveX. When we use Adobe outside of the ActiveX everything seems to be working just fine.

Hi,
Can you verify and let us know whether ieexplorer.exe also doesn't closes or its only with AcroRd32.exe?
Also share with us your product version along with OS details.
regards

This blog doesnt she'd much light on the issue as it describes a bug in IE 8. It says to update IE to a newer version to resolve issues. However I'm already on IE 11. I tried editing the registry at the specified location but it did not resolve the issue.

Hi Soumik,
I've tried creating the registry with no success. I've also tried putting the same registry key in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main and in HKLM\Software\Wow6432NodeMicrosoft\Internet Explorer\Main as suggested here: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/askie/2015/07/23/how-to-configure-tabshutdowndelay-using-group-policy-preferences-gpp-registry/
I would like to test some other solutions, but unfortunately the Acrobat Pro trial I've installed for testing expires tomorrow. Does Acrobat Pro DC do anything differently from Reader DC when opening a file for reading through the Internet Explorer PDF reader add-on?

Hi,
This is a known issue with IE. Please create a registry at HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main - TabShutdownDelay and set DWORD value key to 0.
