Ditch the 2023 User Interface in Acrobat
There are so many shortcomings and problems with the new 2023 GUI interface. Here are just a few:
Swapping left and right-hand panels for no reason. This does not improve anything for users. It just forces users to change everything about how they work in Acrobat every workday.
Functions are indicated by random icons. In the 90s, we learned that icons in software and websites don't work across different populations. Users have a difficult time figuring out what the heck they mean. Give text labels.
The left panel is permanently positioned on the screen and obscures part of the document below. Seriously Adobe, WTF.
The entire menu/panel system can't be customized, moved, or docked. Another WTF.
Hamburger menus (those obscure 3 horizontal lines) are used on mobile interfaces to collapse menus. They are totally unnecessary and inappropriate on desktop interfaces — where working people spend most of their time working. Give people real menus with real names. "Menu" is not accurate, either. What is the name of the other menu to the right? Menu 2? Cheeseburger Menu?
The new interface is inaccessible for those with disabilities who use assistive technologies, especially screen reader users. Adobe has seriously violated its VPAT with governments and corporations worldwide who are required by law to provide accessible work environments and tools.
Grey on Grey is not an accessible color scheme. Can't tell if some icons are active or disabled. Those with low vision can't discern the icons.
Digital signatures, Document Cloud (where Adobe stores your files by default), subscriptions, OCR, file creation, file combining, and accessibility all have reported major problems for the past few years...but rather than fix these critical problems, money was instead spent on rearranging the deck chairs on the sinking Titanic.
As long-time PDF consultants, my firm has found that the majority of customers are professionals who use Acrobat for their jobs. These are not "casual" users working on their smartphones. They are using desktops/laptops with full screens, not mobile devices to do their jobs. And they work with PDFs a lot.
They have developed actions and scripts to automate processes on dozens, hundreds, and even thousands of PDF files every day. These industries include print, prepress, graphic design, accessibility & remediation, accessible forms, variable forms, variable printing, data validation, financial institutions (think of all those bank statements every month!), health care, investment and finance, and manufacturing.
Dramatic GUI changes like 2023's completely change how these automated processes work...if they still work at all.
The cost to these industries to correct the now-broken processes — brought on by Adobe's whimsical, untested design idea — is appalling. If I was a major corporation hit by this unnecessary expense, I'd ban Adobe products from my company and look for another PDF vendor.
There are now many reputable competitors to Adobe Acrobat: See:

Calling this Acrobat's "Modern Viewer" is a form of gaslighting Adobe customers. It's not modern at all — 30 years ago, using icons failed in software and web interfaces, and it's failing again with Acrobat 2023. Sometimes retro isn't good, especially retro user interfaces. Please don't attempt to bring back disco, old-fashioned 20 inch TVs, polyester suits, rotary phones and VHS tapes as being "Modern," too.
Ditch this "Modern Viewer" and instead give us a working tool to get our jobs done.
Revert the interface back to what it was.
Fix Acrobat's bugs. There are so many!
And improve the accessibility for those with disabilities (who can't get to the Comments panel, Bookmarks panel, understand what and how much is redacted, make edits or change the content, scale/enlarge the interface, nor sign a PDF).
For those still reading this, users can revert to the old interface for now (August 2023).
— Windows: Hamburger Menu / Disable New Acrobat
— Mac: View Menu / Disable New Acrobat
I have no idea who long Adobe is going to let us revert to the "real" interface.

+1. The new UI is simply terrible. At first, why make such a dramatic change, when things were just fine? We supply remote workspaces and as soon as we introduced the new UI to users last year, we've had numerous tickets to roll back to a previous Adobe version. So we now use GPO's to force the old UI. From time to time we move small groups of people back to the new UI, and most of them want it reverted.
It's not that we don't accept changes, but they have to provide something better. And this change is 100% for the worse. Most of our users simply use Acrobat Reader. Some have Acrobat Pro though. If Adobe decides to drop the option to revert to the old UI, we'll start implementing another PDF reader as it simply results in way too much tickets.
I just understand how large corporate changes work these days. I assume there's a lot of people in a room, barfing up idea's, like 'We don't have anything useful to do, as the product functionally just works at the moment. Let's create a complete new UI! And then all people are standing up and raving Yeah Yeah Yeah!'.Don't change a winning team.

@Shashank Jain: Unless I'm missing something, I don't see anywhere on your lists the ability to put the bookmark pane back on the left side where it belongs.

My co-worker and I have turned off automatic updates because they kept messing with our 3rd-party add-on. In the past, I wouldn't update Acrobat until I knew it worked properly and occasionally would revert to an older version if I found problems with an update. This option is no longer possible with this cloud version. We will continue to use the Old Acrobat as long as that option is available. We create accessible PDFs for our clients. We need the functionality that Old Acrobat offers. We're not sending PDFs for signatures nor are we designing our documents to be read on phones which Adobe seems to be obsessed with.
Would love to be part of a usability group so Adobe can see how we use Acrobat.

Where is the place that users can sign up to be part of a focus group for providing feedback and doing performance testing, of new versions before they're rolled out to users who find themselves hamstrung by an updated version? Many people have provided comments in this thread and several others, and some would likely be interested in being part of the conversation before it's too late - and we're provided with a product that negatively impacts our work.
Is there such a place for us to sign up and provide the feedback you reference? Before a new version is thrust upon us? -

@Shashank Jain, none of the things in your list matter to your pro users. You need to remember that Reader users are not the ones who pay your salary! I curse Acrobat multiple times daily, even though I'm using the "old" version. It cannot view enlarged complex pages (it constantly refreshes and is completely useless), it cannot remember the scroll bar preferences, it locks up all the time due to an inability to handle complex page viewing on multipage documents like graphic novels, etc. We pro users do not care how wonderful you have made it for the general public - we want it to work for us so that we can do our jobs, get paid and then pay for your idiotic program monthly! The fact that so many of us constantly disable new Acrobat every time it starts up should be an indicator of what a failure your updated version truly is. I really do not want to have to switch to a different program because it's time consuming and irritating to have to do, but apparenlty it's going to be necessary in the new year because Adobe refuses to listen to its users' complaints or acknowledge their needs.

@Shashank - your list of enhancements is not relevant in this thread. This thread is a request to ‘Ditch the 2023 User Interface’. We are not suggesting enhancements to the modern UI and are not interested in what you have enhanced based upon ‘feedback’ (certainly no feedback from this thread!). We are proposing a reversion back to the previous interface, which you are failing to address. No amount of enhancements will resolve the overarching issue with the modern UI - it’s a dysfunctional mess. How many times do we have to impress this upon you?

Hi all, seems like a recent comment from Bhawna got inadvertently deleted. I am re-posting for the reference.
This thread mentions several things related to the new interface and we thank you for all the feedback that has been provided. Over the past couple of years, we’ve been actively engaging with users to understand their feedback on the new interface and based on the same, we've already made several improvements and adjustments to Acrobat's new interface and corresponding functionality, particularly in areas related to usability, accessibility, and customization. Here’s a document that can be referred to regarding some of the enhancements done for the same List of enhancements based on feedback in New UI : https://acrobat.adobe.com/link/track?uri=urn%3Aaaid%3Ascds%3AUS%3Aa41a6ecd-1a8a-3b49-92a7-e33e3a637f02
Following are some that specifically came out of this thread:Draggable quick tools bar which initially was permanent and also ensuring there is a gutter space so that it does not overlap with the document in the default state. We are also considering adding an option to hide it
Adding a “Menu” label in hamburger to avoid any confusion
Addressing a number of accessibility issues as mentioned in the above link
Customization of tools e.g. reordering tools in the All tools pane, pinning page display tools etc.
There have been questions regarding why was the interface changed and following document describes the need for the same -
https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/learn-new-acrobat.html
Given that this thread is more focused on general feedback, going forward, we’ll be leveraging specific threads dedicated to individual issues or feature requests. This allows us to more effectively track and address concerns on a case-by-case basis. If you have any specific feature request or bug / issue, we strongly encourage you to create a new thread for the same.
Please note that your feedback is not just heard but actively shapes our development roadmap and we always welcome the same. We continue to prioritize the needs of users and industries that depend on Acrobat for critical workflows, and we’ll keep working to ensure the tool evolves in a way that truly supports your work.
Thanks again for your insights, and we hope to continue this productive dialogue as we refine Acrobat to meet the needs of all users.

In the news today: "Adobe Inc down 13.69% after the software giant provided disappointing first quarter and full-year revenue guidance as part of its fourth quarter results release after the close of the previous session." Looks like the customers (and the market) are speaking, Adobe. Time is running out to listen and act.

Acrobat, InDesign and Illustrator have significant UI issues and missing basic features required by the design and printing industry... and are steadily getting worse with each update....
I guess 2025 will be the year Adobe switches focus to completely f_cking up Photoshop.
Thanks Adobe. Dont forget to keep increasing your subscription prices and ignoring your user base, you lazy incompetent criminals.

Well, this is utter BS.
Bhawna Arora must be a truly cynical sociopath to consider the needs of the community "implemented" in the latest update to Acrobat. None of the requested changes have been made. Adobe is just going to sweep this under the rug. Looks like it's getting time to cancel my CC subscription. I don't want to support this disgusting company any longer, or the soulless hacks who keep gaslighting us. -

@Bhawna Arora's response is perfect! Absolute word salad that means nothing. We are begging you..... please actually read the feedback from the people USING your software... not the kids designing the software who've never worked in a pressure environment. Please Adobe. Try just a little bit. Please!!

Funny how this is all on a page called acrobat.uservoice. A bit like the update, the needs of users are being completely ignored.

WHAT!! When I look at the original post on this thread, there is an addition, made Dec 12, 2024, of a green box at the bottom that says "IMPLEMENTED." I'm flabbergasted! The comments in the original post, not to mention the >850 responding comments, have NOT been implemented!

Apparently, Adobe doesn't really care about what we think and will just continue to try to shove this nearly useless update down users' throats. I have commented here multiple times, as well as filled out Adobe product surveys as often as they pop up complaining about this issue (even commenting about it in surveys for other Adobe products). Either the designers are keeping higher-ups from seeing what we're saying to protect their own behinds, or no one at Adobe gives a flying f about the users' needs.

please address the industry requirements and listen to the users. This new update is not fulfilling the industry requirements.

So I’ve just trialled the new interface and I really can’t see what’s better about it. The tool icons are way too small and vague in their visual description and everything I need to use is STILL pushed to different corners of the screen and cannot be adjusted. @Bhawana - there is no improvement in this latest version. Everything we have been complaining about is still there. I have to hover over icons to actually see what each tool does, the icons are that badly designed, and the ‘Zoom to selected area’ tool which I use all the time is in totally the wrong position, stuck bottom right. I really don’t understand what it is you guys think you’ve resolved.
Stop using ‘behavioural data’ to sort out the software problems and try speaking to users that need to work with it. This thread alone should give you valuable feedback about the interface.

@Bhawana Arora:
Seriously? Your response to everything that's been said over the last few hours is to just fix the link?? Nothing about keeping this critical thread open since it's so obviously still in use by a large number of Adobe's customers? It's incomprehensible that you can ignore all of us this way!
The work day is just starting in the US. Let's see how many other outraged customers have something to say!
