   1 Title: Isolated field format losses with Acrobat PDF to XML exports

   2 Intent

   I'm writing to report there seems to be a very small but significant bug in the Acrobat 2017 and Pro DC PDF to XML exporter, to share my compelling evidence, and hopefully to gain your support to authorize a code fix that will correct this issue in a future update.

   3 Problem description and scope

   The problem seems to only exist in XML exports. In these cases, individual fields of data are dumped into single XML records, without preserving their individual field identities in the XML code. This problem does not exist in All the other export formats such as Word, Excel, rich text, HTML, and spreadsheet XML.

   4 Steps to reproduce the issue: Perform PDF to XML exports from Acrobat Pro 2017 or Acrobat Pro DC. When you find multiple fields in the original file showing up in a single XML record, then export the same file to Word, Excel, Rich text, HTML or spreadsheet XML, and you will likely find the problem does not exist in those other formats. I have included a sample PDF file and corresponding XML export file that demonstrates the problem in several sections.

   5 OS is Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. Applications are latest Acrobat Pro 2017 and Pro DC.

   6 Expected result: All individual fields of information in the source PDF should be preserved as distinct units in the XML file. Separate lines of information in the source file, like name address, city/state/zip, as well as column headers and individual cells in a table should appear as distinct elements in the XML file.

   7 Observed result: In multiple isolated cases, several fields of information that were separate and distinct in the source PDF file became indistinguishable members of a single XML record, without any delimiters in the XML file.

   The zip contains 7 files. They are as follows:

   Problematic file: SampleBank1.xml

   Other file exports demonstrating greater format integrity:

   SampleBank1_SpreadsheetXML.xml

   9 Documented examples of problematic XML export behavior

   The attached zip contains a redacted bank statement PDF, and 6 different file formats I exported it to.

   There are 3 instances in this XML sample that illustrate this ambiguous XML field formatting export behavior. Strikingly, this bad export behavior does not exist in the other 5 file export formats. I site them all clearly below.

   •9A Instance 1 Name/address/CityStateZip

   Open the Word formatted file in Word. From the top of the document, search for the text string, "JANE DOE". (not including the quotes) The cursor will land at the beginning of three consecutive lines of name and address information:

   JANE DOE
   1234 SESAME ST
   ANYWHERE NC 12345-6789

   This information is also presented as 3 distinct lines, Name, address and city/state/zip in rich text, HTML, and spreadsheet XML.

   In Excel, the line containing JANE DOE almost appears like it's in the same record as street and city/state/zip, but when that cell is pasted into wordpad, it breaks out into 3 separate lines.

   Contrastingly, in the XML file, these same three lines of data are populated to a single XML record, and separated only by a space character. The 3 fields are indistinguishable as follows.
   
   JANE DOE 1234 SESAME ST ANYWHERE NC 12345-6789

   The record containing the exact XML code taken directly from the XML file is as follows:
   <TH>JANE DOE 1234 SESAME ST ANYWHERE NC 12345-6789 </TH>

   There is no way to determine where the name ends and where the street address begins. Same true for City/state/zip. Instead of there being a discernible delimiter between those fields, an ambiguous space character is present.

   •9B Instance 2 Column headers inside the "Summary of checks written" table

   Open the Word formatted file in Word, and from the top of document, search for the text string, "Amount" (not including the quotes) The cursor lands in the 3rd column of the row of table headers inside the "Summary of checks written" table. The row of table headers appears in the Word file as:

   Number(tab)Date(tab)Amount(tab)(tab)Number(tab)Date(tab)Amount(tab)(tab)Number(tab)Date(tab)Amount

   Perfectly delimited, with a single tab character between Number, Date and Amount, and two consecutive tab characters between Amount and Number, .

   The same exact presentation with one and two tab characters is also found in the rich text file.

   In HTML, spreadsheet XML, and Excel, there's great format integrity, each column header is in its own column, and there is an empty column between AMOUNT and NUMBER when the table repeats further to the right.

   Contrastingly, in the XML file, all 9 Colum header fields run together and appear in a single XML record as:
   <P>Number Date Amount Number Date Amount Number Date Amount </P>

   All 9 fields appear in that single XML record, and each column header is separated by a single space character. There's no way to tell where one column header ends and the next one begins. Similarly, there's no way to tell when the sequence of 3 columns is repeated.

   •9C Case 3 Column data inside the "Summary of checks written" table

   Open the Word formatted file in Word, from the top of the document, search for the second instance of the text string, "299" (not including the quotes). The cursor is placed in the first column of the first row of table data inside the "Summary of checks written" table. The complete first row of table data appears as:

   299(tab)11/30(tab)114.38(tab)(tab)305(tab)12/11(tab)30.00(tab)(tab)307(tab)12/20(tab)40.40

   Perfect format integrity again. Just like the row containing the column headers, there is a single tab character between adjacent columns containing 299, 11/30, and 114.38. There are also two consecutive tab characters between the Amount and Number columns, 114.38 and 305. Individual field identification is clear and concise.

   The same exact superb presentation with one and two tab characters is also true for rich text.

   In HTML, spreadsheet XML, and Excel, format integrity is preserved. Each column data entry is in its own column, and there is an empty column between AMOUNT and NUMBER when the table repeats further to the right.

   Contrastingly, and even surprisingly, the XML file contains all 36 cells of information of data, that's the entire table, in a single record, with single spaces separating each field. Without meaningful field delimiters, there's no way to distinguish any of the data fields. It is not safe to assume the table entries will not contain spaces.

   Record from XML file with exact XML coding:

   10 Conclusion:

   Adobe has done a terrific job creating PDF content and format export functionality to many other popular file formats. I have sited only the parts of PDF to XML file export that appear broken. That's a small part of the whole. It does correctly identify and pass along most of other content and format properly. There was another table earlier in the document entitled "Transaction history", where every field of Colum headers and table data are properly exported and conveyed as distinct elements in the XML file, so it's not the entire approach of the XML exporter, only a couple of small instances. .

   The problematic formatting of those ambiguous records sited above are unique to XML file export only. Since all the other 5 export formats (Word, Excel, Rich text, HTML and spreadsheet XML) export those records and maintain the format integrity of each contributing field, I believe the XML export coding is broken or simply misbehaving. I hope you will please join me in recognizing this rogue XML file export behavior as a bug or flaw, and pass it along to your change control process so that it may be corrected in updates coming soon.

2. Cannot type special characters (e.g. š, č, ć) when correcting recognised text

   For example, if I type "Tomić" when correcting recognised text, after clicking "Accept" it changes to "þÿ".

   I'm using Acrobat DC version 2018.011.20055 on Windows 10 Pro version 1803.

3. VERY UNHAPPY WITH USER INTERFACE CHANGE

   hi,

   i recently had a forced update on adobe acrobat 23.008.20470. and i am extremely unhappy with the user interface changes. driving me nuts. put that **** back the way it was. now i have a bar thats taking up a large portion of the right side of my screen all the time. i can't put the buttons i want along the top only. i'm having difficulty getting my text format options to save. i double click on a text to move it and the text just highlights, it doesn't bring up the move cross. i cant even select the current text at all to even delete it or edit it. it just keeps drawing a line of the text. i'm super ******. i'd disable the automatic update if i could but its controlled by IT. very disappointed in this update. put it back, undo it completely it was fine before.

4. Scrolling each column of text separately

   Problem: when I read pdfs with more than one columns, I have to constantly scroll down each column, return to top, and continue scrolling. This is not only a hassle but also seeing other information in other columns usually distract me from the text I am reading.

   proposed solution: It would be nice to have an option to scroll columns of text separately. For example the column that my mouse pointer is on it would become clear for reading and I could scroll it down, while the rest of the columns are slightly blurred to avoid distraction. By moving the pointer on another column, the scroll automatically would go to the top of that column and that column now becomes clear to read.

5. Grouped graphics with a figure tag overlap text content when viewed in Acrobat Reflow

   When viewing a document in reflow, complex grouped graphics (including text, for example, a large map with countries/cities) tagged as figures with alternate text overlap text when viewed in reflow mode. If graphics are ungrouped, they appear fine within the text flow. How can grouped graphics be tagged to allow them to appear without overlap in reflow for accessibility?

6. Copy and Paste Bookmark List to Plain Text

   it's frustrating to 'see' the list of Bookmarks that I cannot export or copy into plain text. I need to search each of those items in our image database and I'm forced to do them one-by-one. Why can't I just copy/paste? I can 'see' exactly what I need, but I can't copy it and use it in a timely manner. One-by-one is AWFUL.

7. When editing a photo, like on a newsletter, text gets messed up.

   When editing a photo in a newsletter for example, I only want to edit the photo, by using photoshop, only to have text recognition mess up the text from a clipping on the same page. So there's no way, or extra steps needed to fix a page and then we receive complaints from clients, because we didn't catch it. This was rarely the case with older versions. I'm sure you're aware of this. WHEN are you going to give us back out old editing capabilities?

8. JavaScript Text Formatting of Auto Email

   I believe there are no current JavaScript functionalities to format the text in an auto generated email or even the alert method. This could include bold, italics, or highlighted, in the actual body of the email. Are there any plans to implement this in JavaScript, or to allow HTML to be used for this?

9. Sending document to multiple people for individual signature

   It would be great to send one document that needs an individual signature to multiple people at one time; receiving each copy individually once person has signed document.

   eg: Send ABC form to Bill.Cool@gmail.com, Sandra.Cool@gmail.com, Tricia.Cool@gmail.com as group email.
   Each person receives their own copy of ABC form...Bill signs form and submits, Sandra signs her ABC form signs and submits, Tricia receives her ABC form, signs and submits. Sender receives, Bill's signed form, Sandra's signed form, and Tricia's signed form all individually with unique signature in each one. As it stands now I must send ABC form first to Bill, making the form fillable and entering a field for signature. Once submitted to Bill I must reopen document, make it fillable (again) and enter signature field for Sandra, send it to her and then open the document again, entering fillable fields a third time with signature field before sending it a third time to Tricia. Really? Is there a better way of doing this?! :/

10. Bug: Lack of text contrast in Navigation lists with Dark Theme

    I use the Dark Theme for accessibility because of light sensitivity.

    When using Dark Theme, many of the Navigation Panes (including Bookmarks, Content, Order, Tags, and probably others) display black text on a dark grey background, instead of properly switching to light colored text. I think there are other parts of the UI that have this same problem, but I can't enumerate all of them.

    The lack of contrast makes these parts of the UI effectively unusable in Dark Theme. Using low screen brightness (again, because of light sensitivity) exacerbates the issue. The bug is very easy to reproduce because it is immediately apparent after switching to Dark Theme. Text contrast is a core accessibility feature, making this a very high priority bug.

    I've attached screenshots of the same window with both Dark Theme and Light Theme to illustrate the bug. I am using Acrobat Pro DC 20.9.20074.389258 on macOS Catalina 10.15.6 (19G73).

11. Allow distributed form to not auto open comment list

    There should be a setting when creating a form in Acrobat Pro such that when a user opens it in Acrobat Reader and they click on the comment icon, that the comment list pane on the right side of the document does not automatically open up. This is confusing for some users. They should be able to open it up manually, but it should be possible to set it to not auto-open that pane.

12. Need Enhancement for User Configuration of AdobeSign Field Defaults

    The default for fields is set to Auto. Each field must have the Appearance edited manually for a different font size. Users need to be able to set defaults for font sizes, i.e. 10pt, for all documents without creating templates.

13. All text and numbers in Pdf are changed to symbols

    Hello, When I access my PDF file all text and numbers are changed to symbols. I have checked and all programs are up to date and I have cleared all my cookies and caches of data. But the issue continues. What can I do to correct this? Thank you.

14. Allow for customizability of text snippets in advanced search results

    Summary of the Problems: Search result snippets in an Advanced Search are often uninformative due to two distinct problems.

    Problem 1. The length of text snippet in each search result is too short.
    Problem 2. The search term occurs too "early" in the result snippet (that is, the term you searched for is the first or second word in the snippet--you see nothing that came before your term, which is often what you needed to know).

    Solution to Problem 1: allow the user the ability to customize the maximum size of snippets returned with search results. We have huge monitors nowadays; we can make the advanced search window itself huge; why not allow for the ability to make the search result snippets really long, too? Or at least longer than they are now?

    Solution to Problem 2: allow the user to customize where the search term occurs within the result snippet. For instance, this could be a finely-grained preference, such as "Search result should be returned with X number of characters/words before/after it" where X is some user-entered number. Or there could be just a coarsely-grained preference, such as, "Search term should occur at the beginning/middle/end of the snippet."

    Reason these are needed: often, a snippet is informative only if you have a certain amount of surrounding text, or only if you know a certain amount of text that comes before and after the term you searched. Presently, however, the search term occurs as the very first, or sometimes second, word of the snippet result. If you wanted to know what came before your search term in order to judge the relevance of a particular search hit, the snippet becomes unhelpful. In such cases, you have no other option but to click over to the document to get your context and then back to your search window to jump to the next result. But then, if you do that, it negates the point of having that result snippet. Such clicking back and forth between search result window and document window might not sound like much, but when your search results number in the hundreds, this clicking-back-and-forth procedure makes your work very inefficient; in a large publishing or indexing project, you might need to perform thousands of advanced searches, each with dozens or hundreds of hits. In such situations, the time-saving potential of implementing this request becomes apparent.

    Summary of the Problems: Search result snippets in an Advanced Search are often uninformative due to two distinct problems.

15. Text box dissapear of the original place and appear in other places

    In the last day I was using Acrobat PDF in a document I was reading and adding commets with the text box tools. When I scroll across the document or close and open again, the text boxs appeared in different pages, duplicated. For example, this blue text was originally in the 30th page but when I opened again the document it appeared in the index

    PDF document reflow (Ctrl+4) is not possible for documents containing images with an alt-text. When the images are decorative (artifact) de document reflows normally. Is this a known behaviour of Acrobat Pro or Acrobat Reader? Foxit reader reflows documents with images with alt-text normally.

17. New Acrobat GUI with controls on left changed Scan & OCR keying

    New Acrobat GUI with controls on left > Scan & OCR > Correct recognized text > previously could begin typing into "Recognized as" field. Now have to click into field before beginning typing. And previously could hit "Enter" to Accept but now have to click on Accept. New GUI is much more time consuming having to use mouse. Please return putting keyboard entry control into first character of "Recognized as" field and allow Enter key to do "Accept". Thanks.

18. Image highlighting incorrectly when adding alt text for accessibility

    When setting alternate text for figures, the image highlighting area is incorrect and the image is distorted making it difficult to see the image.

20. highlighting causes text to change to prior pages while highighting

    When highlighting pdf documents the highlighted section will sometime flash to that from another page while i am highlighting. this is very frustrating as cannot see what I am actually highlighting. once i finish, the original text reappears. this has happened on multiple documents on and off. Never happened on the prior version
